I found this translation after I struggled with an audiobook and a hardcover book that had different translators. I was cautious at first to read a prose translation of a poem written in Italian. English language translations in poetry form were very difficult for me to follow. John Sinclair does several things. He provides an English version of each Canto in which a modern day person can follow along complete with footnotes that give more context. Then, provides the canto in the original form. Then a mini lecture on what Dante was trying to convey, what Dante's contemporaries may have understood, some info about Florence/Italy in historical context, religious references, link to myths and ancient texts etc. Because of Sinclair's approach, I am grasping Dante's work at a much deeper level than I would have understood with other versions. I'll seek out his translations of Purgatorio and Paradiso once I finish Inferno. Truly remarkable journey and work of art.
