The murder of a high society Manhattanite beauty (Gene Tierney) is investigated by a tough police detective (Dana Andrews) who begins to fall in love with her through the portrait which hangs in her apartment. The suspects include an effete snobbish friend (Clifton Webb) and a slithery fiancé (Vincent Price). A truly great film noir, beautifully photographed, that is full of moral ambiguity and sharp dialogue.
