Poignant, eloquent, and aesthetically pleasing, Romantic Comedy is a refreshing documentary that is perfect for those who, like creator and narrator Elizabeth Sankey, have been smitten with romcoms, as well as occasionally burned by them.My only problem, however, with the film was that the summarizing of some of the rom-coms ended up “problematizing” them, but in reality they were not fully understood by the narrators. There were plenty of assumptions and parts of While You Were Sleeping that were definitely taken out of context, and for that the film was soured for me.Yet the commentaries on other rom-coms and the industry in a whole were excellent, and needed to be said. Overall, a great documentary that equally serves as a love letter and a warning to rom-coms everywhere.
