I have to admit that when I first heard about "Honk!", I was a bit skeptical, as I know many of my friends were. A musical about the Ugly Duckling? I mean, come on, it doesn't exactly sound like a hit show. Don't let the premise fool you, though. It's a clever re-working of a well-known tale that's just as much for adults as it is for kids (sort of in the same vein as "Once Upon A Mattress", for anyone who's familiar with that show). It's one of my favorite shows and my friends and I are lucky enough to currently be in a production of it (I'm playing Maureen and Queenie). It's a great showcase for a small ensemble (the show can be done with as few as four men, four women, and four kids- the parts are divided up in the script so that everyone plays several roles except for Ugly, Ida, and the Cat), but also works wonderfully with a large cast, such as in a high school musical. It's witty, clever, cute enough for kids but smart enough for adults, and has some great character parts for a wide range of actors. The music is excellent and very catchy. Any showtunes fan out there should give this soundtrack a listen- don't be surprised when it fully exceeds your expectations.
