Acclaimed period drama/romance with some haunting moments. A young painter, 'Marianne', is commissioned to paint the portrait of a countess's daughter ('Heloise') - a portrait which will be used to appeal to foreign aristocratic potential husbands. As 'Heloise' is an unwilling subject 'Marianne' must pose as a hired companion and covertly complete the commission. This close observation causes a deep attraction to develop between the two women.
