'Marianne & Leonard: words of love' Director: Nick Broomfield (2019)
In 1960 the Greek island of Hydra became home to an international bohemian community. A pre-fame Leonard Cohen met Marianne Ilhan there and they fell in love - he would later immortalise her in the song 'So Long Marianne'. The film shows how their relationship progressed over the years while also covering the tragic outcomes which befell many of the island's idealists. The director also has a connection to the story as he spent time on Hydra- meeting Marianne there as a young man in 1968 and being influenced by her.
