Description

'Bandits of Orgosolo' + 'The Lost World' Director: Vittorio De Seta (1961 + 1954-59) Radiance Limited Edition 2-Disc Blu-ray of 3000 copies | 4K restoration | Region Free |  Staff Pick  | Italian w/ English subtitles

De Seta’s post-neorealist narrative is a rough-hewn study of survival in the highlands of Sardinia, that recalls Visconti’s elemental La Terra Trema and the moral dilemmas of De Sica's Bicycle Thieves.

A Sardinian shepherd ekes out a meagre living until he and his brother find themselves implicated in the murder of a policeman. Although innocent, he lacks faith in the judicial system fearing he may lose his sheep, and so he flees to the mountains where he is driven to dire acts.

This release includes De Seta’s remarkable short film programme The Lost World. Shooting in vivid color in the rural villages of Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria, De Seta captured the rhythms and rituals of everyday life among the fishermen, miners, shepherds, and farmers who continued to live and work according to the pre-industrial traditions of their ancestors. Presented without voiceover so that the rhapsodic visuals speak for themselves, these miniature marvels stand as essential, ennobling records of a vanished world.

Ten short films:
The Age of the Swordfish (1954, 11 mins), Islands of Fire (1954, 11 mins), Surfarara (1955, 11 mins), Easter in Sicily (1955, 10 mins), Sea Countrymen (1955, 11 mins), Golden Parable (1955, 10 mins), Fishing Boats (1959, 11 mins), Orgosolo’s Shepherds (1958, 11 mins),
A Day in Barbagia (1958, 11 mins), The Forgotten (1959, 21 mins)
